Chaucer Dickinson and the Timberscape of Memory is Book Five in the Heretics in Occupied Eden series.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On the evening of February 9, 1964, the unspoken cultural alienation that had for several years simmered between Chaucer and her father came into the open. The whole family gathered in front of the television that Sunday to watch the Ed Sullivan Show. The British quartet, the Beatles, performed five songs, and Chaucer was deliriously smitten by their music and their personas.<\/p>\n<p>After the Beatles\u2019 first set, Banky said, \u201cThat\u2019s a flash in the pan if I ever heard one. I dislike rock and roll on principle, but what this shaggy bunch plays is utter rubbish. \u2018Till There Was You\u2019 is a beautiful song. How dare they desecrate it by sandwiching it between two of their juvenile numbers?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think they\u2019re great,\u201d Chaucer exclaimed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGreat, my ass,\u201d Banky grumbled.<\/p>\n<p>Norah thought the Beatles were charismatic and entertaining but refrained from saying so. Marlowe and Spenser, who enthusiastically agreed with Chaucer, similarly kept their mouths shut.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy don\u2019t we just turn the TV off now?\u201d said Banky. \u201cWe\u2019ve seen what the noise was all about, and it\u2019s just that \u2013noise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Chaucer replied forcefully. \u201cYou always watch Ed Sullivan to the end, even when you complain about the stupid acrobats and hand puppets. You\u2019re excused if you want, Dad, but for a change this is something I want to watch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlright,\u201d Banky acquiesced. He sat back on the couch and folded his arms across his chest.<\/p>\n<p>However, following the quartet\u2019s closing performance of\u00a0 \u201cI Saw Her Standing There\u201d and \u201cI Want to Hold Your Hand,\u201d Banky was impatiently irritated. \u201cThey\u2019ll never last, you mark my words,\u201d he prophesied forcefully as he snapped off the television.<\/p>\n<p>The next afternoon, in defiance of her dad\u2019s words, Chaucer rode her bike to Bill\u2019s Records at Park Central and bought her first, but by no means last, Beatles records.<\/p>\n<h4>More about Chaucer Dickinson and the Timberscape of Memory:<\/h4>\n<p>This companion novel in the HERETICS IN OCCUPIED EDEN series can be enjoyed independently of the other books but offers more riches to those who have read them.
