In this exclusive excerpt from The Dancing Church – Book 3 of the Heretics in Occupied Eden<\/em> series, Cloud meets up with the architect for the new NCC church building and discovers that the two have a past connection. Though they have not ever physically met, they are connected through the Old One and the experience that is described in the opening pages of The Floating Boy – Book 1 of the Heretics in Occupied Eden<\/em>\u00a0series. Here is just one example of the interconnected nature of the characters that populate the series.<\/p>\n

* * * *<\/p>\n

\u201cStrangely<\/strong>,\u201d Skinny said, \u201can incident that happened when I was a senior in high school came to mind when I looked at you. But you weren\u2019t there and couldn\u2019t possibly be connected with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened?\u201d Cloud asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was out on the desert with three of my friends. This woulda been the spring of 1950. We were just farting around. I had scrounged a few bottles of beer, and Shorty brought a rifle to plunk at cans and other things. Anyway, one of the guys spotted a cabin off in the distance, and we thought it was a miner\u2019s shack. So we headed toward it. But the strangest thing happened. The angle of the sun caused the place to radiate colors, like a prism. It was eerie.\u201d Skinny stopped his tale and looked at the four other people at the table. Dymock he knew professionally, but Cloud, Kina, and Lloyd were strangers to him. \u201cI\u2019ve never mentioned a word of this to anyone who wasn\u2019t there that day,\u201d Skinny continued. \u201cIt\u2019s one of those things in life a person doesn\u2019t talk about. I don\u2019t know why I\u2019m telling you now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI suspect I know why,\u201d said Cloud. \u201cDid this happen out beyond Goodyear, southeast of the White Tanks?\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"\u201cYeah,\u201d said Skinny. \u201cAnd if you know that much, I suppose I ought to tell you the rest. As we got close to the shack, this tingling feeling came over me. My whole life sort of played through my mind. And I felt like I understood myself and that God loved me in spite of my screw ups.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow fascinating,\u201d said Kina.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnyway, the other guys felt the same thing, and Shorty dropped his rifle in the dirt. We just stood there for a minute like in a spell.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat was in the shack?\u201d Kina asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe didn\u2019t look,\u201d said Skinny. \u201cWe were so spooked that we turned around and ran back to the car. Shorty left his rifle behind, I remember, and I picked it up for him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEleven years later,\u201d said Cloud, \u201cI was hiking in the White Tanks, and I spotted something shiny in the distance, that I later discovered to be that shack you described. When I looked at that shiny spot, an image came into my mind of four teenage boys hiking around it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut what was in the shack?\u201d Kina asked again.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, if Skinny had poked his head inside in 1950,\u201d Cloud continued, \u201che would have seen a\u2026person\u2026 sitting on the floor. I was six at the time and had a bad case of the measles. The person was\u2026praying for my recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow do you know all this?\u201d Skinny asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, I later met the person who was praying for me,\u201d Cloud offered, hoping his evasive answer would suffice.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is all very mysterious. Cloud, you\u2019re holding something back,\u201d Kina said. \u201cWhat\u2019s going on here?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am totally lost by this conversation,\u201d Dymock said. \u201cBut somehow I sense the need to incorporate a clapboard miner\u2019s shack into the landscaping of your new church.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIntuitively brilliant!\u201d said Cloud. \u201cThe boards were sun bleached white pine.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut\u2026\u201d continued Kina.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook, Kina, this is not the place to say more,\u201d offered Cloud, making a nodding gesture toward the hovering servers. Telepathically, he queried Sojourner about saying more and perceived in his brain a laughing yes. \u201cBut I promise to explain the rest to you and Skinny sometime when we\u2019re together at Angel Nest. Dad already knows the story. Dymock, I\u2019ll tell you too, if you\u2019re interested.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am definitely hooked,\u201d said Dymock. \u201cBy all means, include me in the recounting of your tale.\u201d<\/p>\n
