Strange Angel Press is… an experiment. We don’t have all the answers and have no idea how things will change over time. We are, literally, making this up as we go along. We hope that in hindsight, our actions will be considered through the lens of history as brilliant. Or at the very least, mildly successful.
Yet throughout this plethora of choices, we have one grand idea at the heart of this experiment: writers helping writers with editing.
In our experience, the most time-consuming and difficult aspect of getting a story published is editing. The extensive evaluation and modification of a work that is editing can be an overwhelming task, especially if one doesn’t even know where to start.
Some even skip this step, for the most part. And… you can tell. You can tell by the fourth chapter, that the first three should have been cut and worked in as backstory. You can tell by the first chapter, that the dialogue is stiff and too much time is spent ‘telling’ rather than ‘showing’. You can tell by the first page, that the narrative is filled with passive voice and the tense keeps shifting. You can tell by the first sentence, that boring, unimaginative, uninspiring… dark and stormy night.
We want to help. We want to create another way to tackle the challenge of editing. You give us your time and we will give you ours. We haven’t quite figured out all the details: ensuring reciprocity, covering the many aspects of editing, and knowing when to stop editing and send the writer back to the typewriter.
The most important bit we are learning is knowing when the work is ready to publish. That is, after all, the goal.
